If you have been using the Internet for any length of time you have probably heard
the term "firewall" used. For example, you often hear people in companies say things
like, "I can't use that site because they won't let it through the firewall."
Basically, a firewall is a barrier to keep destructive forces away from your property.
In fact, that's why it's called a firewall. Its job is similar to a physical firewall
that keeps a fire from spreading from one area to the next. As you read through
this guide, you will learn more about firewalls and how to adjust your settings
to have the best MyNet Universe Experience.

Frequently Asked Questions |
What is a firewall?
A firewall is a program that keeps your computer safe from hackers and any malicious
software or applications.
Why do I need a firewall?
If your computer is not protected when you connect to the Internet, hackers can
gain access to personal information on your computer. They can install code on your
computer that destroys files or causes malfunctions. They can also use your computer
to cause problems on other home and business computers connected to the Internet.
A firewall helps to screen out many kinds of malicious Internet traffic before it
reaches your computer.

How secure are the MyNet Universe connections?
All data (video, audio, files, instant messaging traffic, collaborative sessions,
etc.) is encrypted and remains encrypted until received by the intended recipient
so that unencrypted data is never sent across the network. Every transaction that
is initiated by a user is verified on the server for proper rights before it is
executed.
What ports need to be open in order for the MyNet Universe
application to work?
TCP ports 5500-5509 and UDP Ports 5500-5600 for outbound traffic only need to be
open. As with any network changes that are made you will need to retest to see if
your connection issues have been resolved.
What are the benefits of a firewall?
Firewalls allow network administrators to offer access to specific types of Internet
services to selected users. This selectivity is an essential part of any information
management program, and involves not only protecting private information assets,
but also knowing who has access to what. Privileges can be granted according to
job description and need rather than on an all-or-nothing basis.
